Freedom Railway

‘Freedom Railway’ is a project about the railway between Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and Kapiri Mposhi (Zambia). The railway is one of the first infrastructural investments China made on the African continent. At the opening ceremony in 1976, the railway was branded as the ‘Uhuru Railway,’ using the Kiswahili word for ‘freedom.’ While the railway is not living up to its economic potential, still thousands of people use the trains to go to otherwise isolated places along the tracks.

This project was showcased at the Stockholm Centre for Photography and has been highlighted in various news and current affairs magazines, including The Correspondent, VPRO, and OneWorld.
